| A
Bit About The Respiratory System |
| The
horses respiratory system remains influenced upon the
expansion and contraction of the ribcage. |
| This
self repetitive ribcage action can be both positively or negatively
influenced by the actions of muscles that surround the ribcage and
diaphragm. (student ref: internal organ
cavities) |
| Areas
of muscular tension surrounding and connecting to the ribcage and
diaphragm can promote restrictions to your horses intake of oxygen. |
| These
restrictions working through the law of 'cause and effect' will create a
chain of negative influences derived from an inadequate oxygen intake coupled
with the strained muscular efforts of dealing with inhibited oxygen levels. |
| Equine
Massage Therapy and The Respiratory System |
| Every
time the horse inhales, the 'intercostal' muscles contract to lift the rib
cage upwards and outwards together with the contraction of the diaphragm.
This process generates space within the thoracic cavity for the expansion
of the lungs to allow optimal air intake. Consequently, intercostal
muscular tension negatively influences a your horses oxygen intake. The horse who needs more oxygen will then force this
process through muscular exertion causing physiological and psychological
stress and discomfort. |
| Equine massage therapy can work to release these negative
effects aswell as their originating causes,
leaving the horse able to experience enhanced lung
expansion with enhanced oxygen intake, proceeding to create a more beneficial exchange of oxygen and CO2 gases. |
| Muscular
tension surrounding the thoracic cavity derived through stress, anxiety,
discomfort and / or pain can be eradicated or eased, resulting in more stable
and less stressful respiration. |
