A Bit About The Nervous System (Student ref: tense horse stress point paper)
The horses nervous system is a treasure chest of answers and solutions to so many equine problems, both physical and emotional.
Many equine massage techniques are able to positively influence certain conditions with their interactive relationship with the nervous system.
Anxiety, tension, nervous reactions, over sensitivity and under sensitivity can all become regulated and rebalanced.
The unresponsive horse can be reawakened.
The overanxious horse can be calmed.
Your horses neural system is a united form of two separate though intertwined systems; the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.
The central nervous system (C.N.S.) originates within the brain, running through the neck and back vertebrae. (student ref: cranialsacral system)
The peripheral nervous system (P.N.S.) radiates from the neck and back vertebrae housing the sensory and motor nerves. (student ref: f.c. module II - massage applications / dip. course - internal organ cavities)
The peripheral nervous system also houses the 'autonomic nervous system'  (A.N.S.), a system that operates involuntarily, ensuring all life preserving automatic responses are performed as required.
Working with the  cardiovascular system, digestive system, respiratory system and endocrine system, equine massage therapy utilises the nervous system and its effects to great benefit, creating feelings of calm for the nervous horse and stimulation for the despondent or tired horse.
Relationship Between Equine Massage Therapy and The Nervous System
Different massage techniques deliver different responses with their own differing results.
Some massage techniques will activate mechanical and conscious workings, while others are able to activate reflex and subconscious effects.
Some massage techniques can regulate involuntary actions of the parasympathetic division of the A.N.S to instigate more relaxed respiration, a more comfortable working level of the digestive system, endocrine system, and reproductive system.
Some massage techniques instigate desensitisation to certain areas of the more hyper-sensitive horse, such as the horse who displays extreme reactions to being touched on belly, hindquarters, or the application of a normal leg aid.
Once again, an improved horse and rider relationship can be formed by balancing out certain actions and workings that are operating out of balance.
